Deuteronomy 4: Keeping God’s Word

“Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you.” -Deuteronomy 4:2

God was very clear about his Word: Do not change it. The Israelites were not to add or subtract to it. They were to study it and obey it (Ezra 7:10).

Today, the challenge remains to not tamper with Scripture. When a sticky social issue arise, there is pressure to reinterpret. When a personal area is confronted, we feel temptation to make the text say something it does not. Some scholars want to add “new” or “missing” books to the Bible, while other critics want to subtract books as something less than holy.

But Scripture is from God. Just as we do not attempt to redefine God to fit our situation, we are not to tamper with what he has said. The battle, from the time of Moses to today, is not whether God has spoken, but doing what God has said.
