Deuteronomy 11: Obedience Gives Strength

Deuteronomy 11: Obedience Gives Strength 2012-08-15T08:46:26-04:00

“Observe therefore all the commands I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength to go in and take over the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess…” -Deuteronomy 11:8

Though I have read Deuteronomy several times, I had never noticed an important observation from verse 11. God told his people to obey his commands so they would have strength. Does obedience give us strength?

From God’s perspective it does. When Israel obeyed the Lord, they were able to enter the land and conquer their opponents. When they did not, they failed. Their sin led to losses in many areas of life.

But does this principle still apply today? When we obey God’s teachings, we will still suffer at times, yet our lives will be marked by strength. Rather than winning a war or increasing real estate, we’ll find ourselves maturing in ways that excel beyond the norm. Why? Obedience is the result of a close walk with God. Our love for him results in a greater love for others, leading to a life that is strong, with deeply planted roots (Psalm 1).

Today, do not look at God’s teachings for your life as something to rebel against. This is a sign of weakness. Instead, obey. You’ll find your life strengthened, step by step, as you do.
