“19 Do not pervert justice or show partiality. Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the innocent. 20 Follow justice and justice alone, so that you may live and possess the land the Lord your God is giving you.” -Deuteronomy 16:19-20
Our world speaks much of justice. Justice for the poor, the oppressed, the marginalized, the hungry–the list runs on and on. But what is God’s view of justice?
In Deuteronomy 16, God’s justice includes some clear guidelines. Justice means not twisting just or showing favor to one party over another. Justice refuses bribes. Justice is undivided.
Our human temptation is to place greater emphasis on those who have helped us along the way. While this is okay in some areas of life, when it comes to justice, God expects no favoritism. We stand for what is right, not those we like better or who treat us well. When we do, we “follow justice.”
