Judges 8: Looking for the Right Leader

Judges 8: Looking for the Right Leader 2012-10-31T11:44:00-04:00

22 The Israelites said to Gideon, “Rule over us—you, your son and your grandson—because you have saved us from the hand of Midian.” 23 But Gideon told them, “I will not rule over you, nor will my son rule over you. The Lord will rule over you.” -Judges 8:22-23

After Gideon led the Israelites to victory, the people asked him to lead the nation. Gideon rightly rejected the offer. Why? Gideon was not the one who brought about victory; it was the Lord.

People throughout history have attributed God’s answers as the work of others. While God has and does work through his people, credit is to be given to the Lord for their success. Otherwise, God is neglected as the source of strength.

Nations choose leaders today based on a variety of attributes; whether the candidate attributes success to God’s blessing should be one of them. Even in our personal lives, our foremost longing must be the Lord’s glory. May we choose to settle for nothing less.
