Welcome to the Homestead Skeptic, a new blog where you can get skeptical and science-minded takes on current events from the perspective of rural homesteaders and activists David and Rae.
A little bit about us:
We’ll cover a wide variety of topics on this blog, but our priorities will remain consistent:
- Truth matters. We will always prioritize publishing facts over fiction.
- Positive outlook. While we will cover incredibly serious topics, such as dangerous and false claims that pervade the agriculture industry, we will also try to share positive things, such as heartwarming photos of our own five-acre Southern California ranch.
- Fight injustice. We will always stand up for the little guy, and on the side of justice. We think Black Lives Matter, and that science does, too. We also support the LGBTQ+ community, and are grateful to the Indigenous people who once tended the same land we’re using to sustain ourselves.
- Not for profit. You will have several opportunities to support our work here (including becoming a “farmhand” on Patreon), but that money will be funneled right back into the farm.
With that being said, it’s time you meet the writers:
David and Rae have been married for five years, but in 2021 they decided to do something that changed it all: they sold their four bedroom peak-of-the-lake mountain home near Big Bear and bought a five-acre ranch in the Southern California high desert. They bought a shell of a cabin in the middle of nowhere, and have been building it up from nothing for months.
Now, they’re finally ready to start sharing their journey with all of you. If you like goats, chickens, livestock guardians, stars, gardening, science, and kittens, you’re in the right place!
David G. McAfee is a journalist and author who writes about the intersection of religion and science. He graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a dual degree in English and Religious Studies, with an emphasis in Christianity and Mediterranean Traditions. He spent part of his childhood on his grandparents’ 12-acre ranch, and always enjoyed gardening. He’s on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Rae McAfee is an artist, designer, and farmer who is currently aspiring to be an arachnologist. She graduated magna cum laude from the Agricultural Science department of Oregon State University, and has extensive experience in the field of veterinary medicine. She is on Instagram and Twitter.
We look forward to sharing our lives with you! Feel free to subscribe for updates and share this link with your friends and loved ones.
