Balance in a Missional Life?

Balance in a Missional Life? November 27, 2012

Here are some good words for those who seek to live a missional life: Balance is bunk.

“Here’s the hard reality. All of us have multiple priorities. Each of these priorities has multiple and competing demands. Not only that, but most of these demands are mutually exclusive. That is, if you choose to do one thing, you’re also choosing not to do something else. . . .”

I would add one thing. Even if one tries to strike a balance among most important things, a person will never have it. For math geeks out there, we might say that balance is not punctiliar. At any given point, one is moving from imbalance to imbalance, from one extreme to another.

Unfortunately, so many people feel stressed because they mistake two kinds of balance. One is like trying to stand a pencil on its sharpened tip. The other is similar to a pendulum swinging back and forth. Balance is only seen by stepping back and looking at life over a longer period of time.
