Let Judas Be Your Prayer Partner. April 6, 2015

Stepping through the green wet grass, I picked up egg after egg. Stuffing the brightly colored pieces of plastic into the trash, I was reminded of how quickly we trash what we deem useless. I started to think about the message of Jesus. In the midst of my prayers concerning reimagining leftover resurrection trash, one name kept coming to mind…Judas.

Though the gospel writers totally destroy Judas, Jesus still seems to love him very much. After he made the terrible mistake of betrayal, Judas was so remorseful that he begged the authorities to stop the murder of Jesus and when they didn’t he committed suicide. As for the rest of the disciples, they just hid in their closets and let the authorities kill Jesus without much of a fuss at all. Who loved Jesus more…the one who gave his life out of his love or the ones who hid?

I believe that Judas might have loved Jesus more than anyone else. After his death, I have no doubt that Jesus lovingly embraced Judas for all eternity. While I certainly don’t encourage suicide under any circumstance, I think we would be wise to give our lives to Jesus with the same intensity and love that Judas did. Perhaps, now is the time to let Judas be your prayer partner.

Amen.
