The weather is difficult this evening. We slipped and slid a bit on our drive down. The wind, rain and ice are brutally cold. This does not seem to be a night where we could experience a good conversation outside much less the divine. However, I think Jesus is found out in the elements on nights like tonight.
Imagine Mary and Joseph as street people. Imagine Mary birthing Jesus behind the same dumpster that earlier the family had dug around in for food. Imagine pellets of ice hitting the newborn Jesus’ head.
In Matthew 25, Jesus declares, “What you have done to the least of these you have done to me.” I want to be with Jesus. I want to be with the least. I think both Jesus and the least are out there freezing their asses off tonight. Will we go and be with them? Will we brave the elements to have an encounter with the divine?
In just a second, we are going to discuss what it looks like to become a church without walls that happens out there amongst the people. I have increasingly come to a place where I believe we miss Jesus because we are afraid to leave the safety of the walls and boundaries we have created. Now is the time to May God grant us the courage and strength to be where God is.
Amen.
