First Communion Gift Ideas?

First Communion Gift Ideas? 2016-11-11T13:59:57-05:00

Elizabeth Scalia’s post on the value of Catholic kitsch reminded me I had a bleg: What gift should I get #4, and a smattering of other various 1st communicants in the neighborhood, for their 1st communions?

What I *should* do is visit my local Catholic gift and book store, browse around, and spend way too much money.  That’s my usual method, and it works great.  Unfortunately, “going out and browsing around” is right out just now. So I started reading catalogs.  I know I don’t want the:

  • Divine Mercy Coffee Mug
  • Holy Family Watch
  • Jesus Baseball Coach Figurine
  • Communion Girl with Jesus Glitter-dome (okay, that one’s tempting).

We already have the glow-in-the-dark crucifix.  Which I love.

So what shall it be?  I got #3 a beautiful little children’s Missal, I might could go with something like that.  We have an excess of Bible and saint books lying around, but I’m not strictly opposed if there’s something that fills an unmet need.  I’m thinking maybe a nice (small) piece of art might be good.  Vote away.

Related: Grandma took #4 out shopping for a white purse and shoes to go with her hand-me-down first communion dress.  She came home and showed me the goods, and the white heart-tights they’d found to go with.  (Why yes, my mother-in-law is a genius when it comes to these things.)  Tasteful, classy, I approved.  My daughter fully jumped up and down with excitement at the prospect being The First Communicant in a few weeks.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone, ever, so excited.  Nice.
