Here are a handful of resources for those who are interested in following all the sex talk at the Synod, but are having a hard time making sense of the assorted news reports.
For beginners, take a look at:
- This homily text from Fr. Jim Leblanc on marriage, divorce, and annulments. If I have my facts straight, Fr. Jim was a lawyer before he became a priest and canon lawyer; he’s also a personable, genuinely pastoral guy. He knows his stuff and will steer you right.
- Here’s Fr. Jim’s Q&A sheet on marriage and divorce, if you want to go straight to the FAQ’s.
- Here’s a collection of Catholic Sex & Marriage 101 Links.
- If you didn’t already click Simcha’s post linked above, she has a pile of good resources too.
If you already understand the fundamentals of how marriage, divorce, annulment and remarriage work, and weirdly you’re hungry for more, consider following Dr. Ed Peters’ blog, In the Light of the Law, which is currently running a pile of annulment-related commentary as various news reports come out. Know that you are picking up on a conversation midstream, so you need to be well versed in your facts (see the beginners’ list, above) before you start your eavesdropping.
I enjoy this blog because Dr. Peters mixes an entertaining and enlightening combination of straight-up legal commentary with curmudgeonly opinionating; I say that in a gushing, fangirl kind of way. As with the best of that genre, opinion and fact are always pointedly distinguished, so you know you can keep straight his opinion from yours.
