Is this my new reality?

Is this my new reality? September 21, 2010

That question — Is this my new reality?, a question asked directly by a woman to President Obama, by a woman who, along with her husband, supported and believed in Obama’s vision of change, was a powerful question. It is now being run on TV stations and radio stations.

What was more powerful than her question was the lack of an answer, and it points once again to something I’ve been observing here at times for a year or more —

The Democratic Party has no Story.

What I mean by Story is what George Lakoff (in Thinking Points: Communicating Our American Values and Vision) meant when he sketched how political and social vision is constructed: it tells a compelling Story that both taps into America’s history and sketches a vision for where America can go.

But the Democrats — neither Obama nor his official spokespersons — have a Story to tell that says “This is where we’ve been and this is where we’re going.”

The Dems better get one soon.

Avoid going after the Repubs. Do the Dems have a Story?
