The Germans have removed the presently existing longest word from the lexicon: Geschwindigkeitsbeschränkungen? That’s a speed limit — which you’ll probably pass before you have a chance to sound it out. Want to foil hackers? Trying setting your password to Handschuhschneeballwerfer, or a slang term for coward. But eventually, things went too far, even for the Germans. Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz — a 63-letter word that describes a “law for the delegation of monitoring beef labelling” — has been kicked out of the Deutsch lexicon, thanks to the law’s repeal... Read more

Ed Stetzer proposes seven tests in choosing music for Christian worship: While it may be difficult, I do believe it’s possible to evaluate musical preferences using God’s word. Stephen Post: Love manifests itself in different ways, all of which are necessary and useful. If love is the hub of a wheel, its spokes point outwards according to the needs of the beloved. There are at least ten modulations or forms that love takes. Celebration is love affirming the lives and achievements of others; Helping is love lifting burdens for others; Forgiveness is love in response to contrition; Carefrontation (confrontation being such a limited word) is love standing against destructive behaviors; Humor is love uplifting... Read more

Cement (not the same as concrete). That’s what. Source. The secret to making sustainable, strong concrete may have been at the bottom the Mediterranean Sea for the past 2,000 years: Researchers believe that the ancient Romans created concrete that is more environmentally friendly and durable than modern cement…. But women’s basketball has been mismanaged and Sally Jenkins has an excellent sketch of its problems. In my view, women don’t play the game the way men do, they are not as physical or athletic and the women’s game has become too physical for the level of play.... Read more

From David Moore, at Fuller Seminary and his very-well-done Burner Blog: If you’re looking for the key to Will Willimon’s new novel, Incorporation (Cascade, 2012), you can find it here: More humiliating was his desperate need for this building. For twenty years he had deceived himself, telling himself and the world that Hope was nothing but a hulking millstone shackled to his neck. Tonight he knew it to be the other way around. Tonight he adored every neogothic, incongruous inch of this imposing... Read more
