It’s not every day you get to see a car that carried a pope — or at least the same kind of car. I spent the morning tooling around the Orange County International Auto Show in Anaheim, California, not far from Disneyland. Among the exhibitors was Italian automaker Fiat, currently a subsidiary of American car company Chrysler. When Pope Francis arrived in Washington, D.C., for his U.S. visit in September, he wasn’t picked up in a stretch limo or an... Read more

Here’s my latest for The Tidings, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, focusing on efforts to help construct safe housing for Christian refugees who choose to stay in Iraq, spearheaded by a Chaldean Catholic bishop in  San Diego, California. Bishop Soro was formerly a bishop of the Assyrian Church of the East. A longtime advocate of the primacy of the Apostolic See of Rome — he proudly displays thick albums of photos of the times he has met... Read more

This past weekend, attendees at New York Comic Con saw a teaser trailer for the second season of Netflix’s “Marvel’s Daredevil,” courtesy of Jeph Loeb, the head of Marvel Television. After a “sizzle reel” of scenes from season one, there are some scenes from season two, which is currently in production. Unsurprisingly, a low-quality version of the clip wound up online. Then, on Wednesday, Oct. 14, a high-quality version of the trailer was leaked. Alert fans managed to grab it... Read more

Looking at most fashion runways, one could only conclude that lots of designers don’t like the way women look, since much of high fashion seems intended to obscure the natural female form and remake it in various bizarre ways (the fact that most models have figures more like boys than grown women doesn’t help). And then there’s Los Angeles-based designer Sue Wong. I had the pleasure of going to her Spring 2016 opening last week in Hollywood, and her colorful... Read more

Playboy magazine, which led the charge to turn sex — and the female body in particular — into a public commodity has now decided that less is more. One would hope it’s the beginning of a cultural trend, but these days, it’s not safe to predict much. What we do know is that Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, 89 (likely the combined age of the last few of his wives or so), agreed to a suggestion by magazine editor Cory Jones... Read more

Christianity Today thinks so, in reacting to the announcement on Friday, Oct. 9, on Fox News’ “The Five” by FNC contributor and author Kirsten Powers that she will — actually, it should be happening right about now as I type, at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 10 — be received into the Catholic Church. In a story called “Pope Francis’ Latest Convert: Kirsten Powers,” CT said: Powers, who grew up in the Episcopal Church, became an evangelical about 9 years... Read more

Today on Facebook, actor/director Nick Searcy (“Justified”), who’s currently at the helm of the “Gosnell” movie, shooting in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, offered some words of wisdom for his fellow film directors. Notes to future directors: When directing a movie, 1. Wear headphones at all times, whether anything is coming through them or not. They protect you from outside noise. 2. Stay with the crew and the DP on set. Talk to the actors constantly. Make sure they are confident and... Read more

The Bible isn’t all that kind to goats, always leaving them on the short end of the stick compared to sheep. I get it, Christ is a shepherd, not a goatherd. And, of course, God loves all his creatures, goats included. But if the Bible writers had seen this video, they might have had a different attitude. No, I don’t know why the goat kids are in jammies, and I don’t care. Enjoy. Image: Wikimedia Commons Don’t miss a thing: head... Read more

Back when I had just come back to the regular practice of the Faith, I accompanied a friend to Mass at her local parish in Orange County, California. I’d been away for a long time — long enough that, when I used to take Communion as a child, it was on the tongue, on our knees, from a priest, period. Granted, our small-town parish was rather behind on a lot of liturgical innovations (thank God, as it turned out). Anyway,... Read more

In January 2012, I spent a blustery day on the set of The CW’s “Hart of Dixie,” chatting with cast members — including former “Friday Night Lights” star Scott Porter. On the record, we discussed how he’d have liked to have Tim Tebow as a TV brother. Off the record, he talked about designing the engagement ring he was preparing to give his girlfriend, Kelsey Mayfield, whom he met while shooting “Friday Night Lights” in Austin, Texas (she was a University... Read more
