Scottie Scheffler Leads Memorial Tournament by Four Strokes

Scottie Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler—the #1 pro golfer in the world for nearly two years—is continuing his hot streak this week by shooting a one-under par 71 today in Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, to take a four stroke lead into tomorrow’s final round. Tied for second place are Collin Morikawa, Sepp Straka, and Adam Hadwin.

On the front nine, it looked like Scheffler might run away from this stellar field in the Tour’s 7th “signature event” and hide. The 27-year old Texan had a four stroke lead and then bogeyed the par five 7th hole and triple bogeyed the par four 9th hole to put him in a tie with his playing partner Adam Hadwin. But Scottie immediately recovered to retake his commanding lead even though he stumbled at the end by three putting the par four 18th hole for a bogey to register a 10 under par 206 total for the three rounds.

Scottie Scheffler is known for his spiritual convictions as a Christian and his regular participation in the PGA Tour Bible Study (co-founded by Yours Truly). The New York Post (May 16th) reported recently that these weekly meetings “can be standing room only with anywhere up to 100 people present, as players, their partners, caddies and officials come together to share prayers and discuss scripture.”

The Deseret News quoted Scheffler at that time as saying, “I’m a faithful guy. I believe in a creator. I believe in Jesus. … I feel like I’ve been given a platform to compete and show my talent. It’s not anything that I did. Golf is something I do. It’s a tremendously huge part of my life, but it doesn’t define me as a person.” He means that following the teachings of Jesus is mostly what he is about. It seems to show in his life because Scottie Scheffler is one of the most beloved and respected players on the PGA Tour by both his peers and the golf fans.
