Scottie Scheffler survived the loss of his four-stroke lead starting today to win the PGA Tour’s signature event Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, by one stroke over playing partner Collin Morikawa. It was Scheffler’s fifth win on the big circuit this year in eight tournaments played and the eleventh win of his career. It is causing golf fans to start comparing the 27-year old popular pro with the legendary Tiger Woods. After all, Scottie not only wins so much these days, he leads all the major statistical categories this year such as greens-in-regulation, overall driving, and putting. When you are the best at both drive-for-show and putt-for-dough, how can you not win almost all the time? Plus, Scottie won The Masters and the Players Championship this year after being crowned Player-of-the-Year last year. And if he had not been arrested and jailed during the PGA Championship, he may have won there.
Yet, it wasn’t easy today for the big Texan with the heart warming grin. He didn’t bring his A-game, finishing with a two-over par 74. Thus, Scheffler’s nearest pursuer, Collin Morikawa—who also is a two-time major champion like Scheffler—had several opportunities late in the back nine today to overtake the seemingly invincible new star who stands six feet three inches tall. But the smaller Californian failed to capitalize on his gifted chances.
On the last hole, the 18th, Scottie had a downhill, fast, 3.5 foot par putt that he made to seal-the-deal and thereby prevent a sudden death playoff with Collin. When his ball dropped out of sight, Scottie gave a little fist pump to demonstrate that he was still the boss-of-the-day.
