Trump-Harris Debate Tomorrow

Trump-Harris Debate Tomorrow September 9, 2024

Former U.S. President Donald Trump, a Republican, and current U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, a Democrat, are scheduled tomorrow to have their only televised debate prior to the presidential election November 5th. There is a noticeable difference between these two candidates regarding religion and morality, and I believe this should be seriously considered when Americans cast their vote soon.

Kamala Harris seems to me to have a genuine

Christian faith. She grew up for a while in Berkeley, California, but attended a Pentecostal church in Oakland where she says she came to faith in Jesus even though her family was not Christian. And later, as the District Attorney of  San Francisco (2002-2010), then Attorney General of California (2010-2017), then a U.S. senator of California (2017-2021), and now U. S. Vice President, she belonged all that time to a Baptist church in SF and has been a close friend with the pastor. He has spoken publicly about Kamala’s Christian faith being very genuine. Kamala Harris therefore has quite a resume as a person who believes strongly in law and order and has a reputation for being fair as a prosecutor.

Donald Trump—not so much. He has a reputation of being dishonest and extremely litigious as a ruthless businessman in New York City. And since he became U.S. president, he has been the most arrogant and biggest liar I have ever seen in my lifetime. Yet Trump and his advisors saw back in 2015 that evangelicalism was a large and politically untapped segment of American voters. He then conned them by adopting political positions to get their votes. Yeah, Trump had a church affiliation during his youth. And he has claimed to be a Christian. But when asked if he had ever asked God to forgive him of his sins, he said he had not. For me, such a hollow religious profession is all a big show by this entertainer.

For the past two or three generations, America has been living in a period of time some Christian theologians call “easy believism.” It means people claim to be Christian without providing much or any evidence in their lives to prove it. It means that a lot of Christians are CINOs—Christian in Name Only. Jesus taught a lot about this. For instance, he often said to new disciples “follow me.” That meant to live life like Jesus did, to learn his teachings, and try to make them the guide of life.

But what about people who say they believe in Jesus, but don’t have much to show for it in their life. Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life” (John 10:27-28 NRSV). Notice he said, “they follow me.” And him saying, “I know them,” connects to what he said in the beginning of his public ministry.

In Jesus’ so-called Sermon of the Mount, he said of Judgment Day, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many deeds of power in your name?’ Then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; go away from me, you evildoers'” (Matthew 7:21-23).

In my book, Bible Predicts Trump Fall, I often apply biblical proverbs to Trump to support this book’s title as follows: “When pride comes, then comes disgrace” (Proverbs 11:2); “pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18).

I hope the debate tomorrow between Trump and Harris shows the contrast between these two people that I’m laying out here. As the two photos here show of them, she is upbeat with joy, whereas he is an angry man seeking vengeance against his political opponents. What do you think?
