Four PGA Tour professional golfers are tied for the lead today at 17 under par, 199 total, after three rounds in the RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario, Canada, near Toronto. They are Dustin Johnson, Byeong Hun An, Whee Kim, and Kevin Tway. They have distanced themselves by four strokes from the remainder of the field. The last three players have yet to win on the PGA Tour, whereas Johnson is the #1 World Ranking player. It should be an exciting fourth and final round tomorrow.
As a former Canadian Open champ, winning in 1970, I always enjoyed playing in the Canadian Open on the PGA Tour. I played it several times at Glen Abbey, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. It’s a very good layout. And it is scenic on the back nine, which dips down into sort of (notice that common Canadian “sort of” expression) a canyon that follows a river until you ascend out of it on the last three holes. Occasionally, you will see a red fox or other wild animal sauntering across a fairway.
Kevin Tway’s dad, Bob Tway, was an excellent player on the PGA Tour. He won eight times there, with one being a major: the 1986 PGA Championship. Bob started the regular PGA Tour right after I finished playing out there full time.
My family used to love to attend the Canadian Open. Canada is a nice place for a family vacation. My family especially liked to eat the delicious smorgasbord lunch in the top of the clubhouse. It also affords a lovely view of much of the golf course, especially the 18th green nearby. The Canadians are known for their hospitality. It was always a treat.
