Read more

Read more

Earlier this year Pope Francis established a new feast on December 10th in the Church’s liturgical calendar: the Feast of Our Lady of Loreto.  The decree which established the feast day states, “this celebration will help all people, especially families, youth and religious to imitate the virtues of that perfect disciple of the Gospel, the Virgin Mother, who, in conceiving the Head of the Church also accepted us as her own.” Loreto is a small town on the Adriatic coast... Read more

I sat alone on a brown wooden bench at the open air Erawan Shrine in downtown Bangkok during the evening rush hour.  The wheels of commuter trains above me screeched as the trains made a sharp turn on two elevated concrete railways.  Thousands of men and women participating in the “Occupy Bangkok” protest blocked the adjacent roads.  One of the protestors had checked my bag as I crossed the crowded protest line to reach the shrine from my nearby hotel. ... Read more

What a shock. One December 3rd, Bishop Daniel Jenky of Peoria announced that Rome has postponed the beatification of Fulton Sheen which was scheduled for December 21st of this year at the cathedral of Peoria.  The delay is attributed to a request from some U.S. bishops who have asked for further consideration of this formal act by the Church which would move Archbishop Sheen one step closer to sainthood. This should have never happened.  It is a tragedy.  Whatever the... Read more

A few years ago I met a young novice preparing to be a Jesuit priest.  I remember him well because he was in the middle of a tremendous journey that I would have found impossible to undertake.  After completing his first year of studies, he was given a bus ticket to Macon, Georgia.  He had never been there, and his mission was to live entirely on the goodness and charity of others without staying in one place for more than... Read more

Rome has announced that Archbishop Fulton Sheen will be beatified next month.  Seventeen years after opening the cause for canonization, and seven years after Pope Benedict officially recognized the Archbishop lived a life of heroic virtue, the beatification ceremony will take place at Saint Mary’s Cathedral, Peoria, on December 21st at 10am. Known for his many thought-provoking writings, and his television presence, he has been better known throughout these past few years for the dispute between the Diocese of Peoria... Read more

Every person has a need to be heard.  This need is significantly increased if a person has been deeply hurt.  At any given encounter with an individual, he or she has a unique life story to tell that has forged his or her thought and belief.  It is important to listen before speaking, especially when interacting with someone hurt through negative experiences by the Church and her members. A recent study conducted by the Barna Group notes that people want... Read more

Read more

Read more
