Read more

Several years after World War II, while Europe still faced a major crisis of displaced people and refugees, Pope Pius XII wrote the Apostolic Constitution Exul Familia Nazarethana where he addressed the need for nations to open their doors to these people and encouraged pastoral action by the Church. Citing the Holy Family as the archetype of every refugee family, he invoked their protection over all migrants and refugees who “whether compelled by fear of persecution or by want, are... Read more

Recalling the conversion of the Ninivites after the preaching of Jonah, Pope Francis implored God so we may receive the gift of tears, which is the gift of God’s mercy that transforms the heart from within. His homily in Ciudad Juarez was a call for us not to forget that immigration today is mostly forced, where thousands leave their homeland due to poverty and violence. The Pope expressed a desire not to forget the human tragedy that immigration is today.... Read more

Read more

Read more

Pope Francis is putting his words into action: go out to the margins of society! Yesterday he celebrated Mass in the poorest and most populous suburb of Mexico City, Ecatepec, where nobody dares to enter due to its high crime and violence. Even the police is afraid. Most of its 1.7 million inhabitants live in deplorable conditions, and an estimated 100,000 live in extreme poverty. It is here that Pope Francis chose to celebrate Mass and speak against the “father... Read more

Pope Francis addressed the Bishops of Mexico in the beautiful Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico City after the historic reception of the Pope by President Peña Nieto. Weaving the presence of Our Lady of Guadalupe into his address, I wish to share some topics the Pope addressed in his talk. Francis said strongly to the bishops, “we do not need princes, but a community of witnesses of the Lord.” The Pope emphasized the need for unity and communion among the bishops. “If... Read more

Tonight I had the opportunity to attend a ceremony where the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) honored ten women of vision. The program of the evening described these women as an “elite cadre of trailblazers whose remarkable ideas, insightful leadership and distinguished service have profoundly sculpted the city of Savannah.” Among these ten women, five of whom are deceased and five are living, were included Mother Mathilda Beasley and Flannery O’Connor, both Catholic women who left an undeniable... Read more

Several months ago, I preached about the ongoing suffering of Christians in the Middle East to a packed cathedral in Savannah.  When Mass ended, an elderly man dressed in a roman collar approached me and began thanking me for the homily. I had not noticed him during Mass. He stretched out his hands, grabbed my forearms tightly, and with eyes that pierced my soul, told me he was a retired Syriac Orthodox Bishop. This confirmed for me the fact that this... Read more

This morning, Bishop Gregory Hartmayer, OFM Conv. dedicated the newest church in the Diocese of Savannah. In 1955, the Diocese purchased a small chapel built by Henry Ford in the 1930s in the town of Richmond Hill.  This chapel held nondenominational services for workers of Ford Plantation, an enormous property owned by Ford which included farms and timber. Saint Anne Parish has grown tremendously since 1955, especially in the last ten years during which Richmond Hill has experienced tremendous growth.... Read more
