    I don’t think either would either the fundamentalist or believer in logical positivism/scientism (i.e. scientismist) would have a problem with myths in the sense you talk about. But both ultimately have the same belief about Biblical literalism. If one part of the Bible is myth without clearly being marked out as myth (e.g. a parable), then any part of the Bible including the miracles of Jesus could be a myth, and Christianity can’t be sure of any of its doctrines, including the resurrection of Jesus or Divinity of Christ. Catholics don’t have this problem. We believe in the Bible only because we first believe in the Church that gave us the Bible.

    But as Pope Benedict XVI pointed out in “In the Beginning: A Catholic Understanding of the Story of Creation and the Fall”, Catholics aren’t completely off the hook. Yes Genesis isn’t “a science textbook” and we can take literary genre into account during interpretation, but that seems to outsiders like an excuse since the Church *has* taken Genesis to be more literal than it currently does. If the Church can arbitrarily change its mind about how literally a passage can be taken when the science of the day determines that it is false by its standards (e.g. geocentricism), how can an outsider be sure what’s true and unchangeable, and what’s false but hasn’t yet been disproved. How can an outsider know that any of the Biblical interpretations won’t ever change? I’ve scarcely started Pope Benedict XVI’s book, but he does raise good questions that a person of good conscience (Catholic or not) would raise.

    Given what he’s written in other books, I suspect his way out of this dilemma is to fall back on both the Church Fathers and use the historical critical method in this way: all texts describing history are historically accurate. However, different cultures and times write history in a different way. While the Gospels, Genesis, Herodotus’s histories, and modern historical recordings all record true history, each record them in dramatically different ways with different emphases (e.g. WRT chronology, symbolism, numbers, etc). We get in trouble when we forget that.
