Sweet Tweets for 6/20/14 — Sharing Our “Treasure” on World Refugee Day

Today, we commemorate “World Refugee Day”. According to the website of the United Nations:

“Most of the world’s refugees – 86 per cent — live in the developing world, compared to 70 per cent 10 years ago. Most of these countries have kept their doors open to people in search of safety, and have shown a generosity that is often well beyond their means. I appeal to all Member States and our partners in civil society to do their utmost to support the nations and communities that have welcomed the forcibly displaced into their midst.” Ban Ki-moon

It feels very fitting that we should commemorate this day on the same day as our daily gospel from Matthew 6:19-23 teaches us to keep our “treasures” in their proper perspective:

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,
where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal.
But store up treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal.
For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.

For those of us blessed with faith, with shelter and with love, the “treasures” God showers upon us are meant to be multiplied by sharing them with the world around us. We don’t need government programs or mandates to show us the way. We each have the calling to let our treasure become a gift to the world around us. “For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be…”
