Pope Francis Tacloban 10

I was prepared this morning to write about how wonderful it has been to watch Pope Francis’ visits this past week to Sri Lanka and the Philippines. What a blessing to see the joy with which he has been greeted by people whose faith is so alive and vibrant. Certainly there has been news this week on that front that has caused serious conversations as well. And I’m convinced that such dialogue–when engaged in with respect–is good for us as well.

But I awoke this morning to very sad news of the passing of  27-year-old Kristel Padasas of Manila.  Kristel was a team member with Catholic Relief Services. A tragic accident at the site of the papal Mass in Tacloban took her life.  While I obviously never knew Kristel, it’s easy to imagine the amazing type of young woman she was through the way in which she gave herself to the service of our Church and others in need of aid and care. Kristel will be greatly missed by her family, her community and her colleagues at CRS serving around the world. She is in my prayers today as I prepare to see firsthand the work of CRS in Tanzania next week. Please join me in praying for the repose of her soul and for those who are mourning her loss.

I’m grateful to my friend John Clem, O.F.S. for this week’s Sweet Tweets:
