What is My One Sentence Bible? 10-29-09: Knowing Jesus is knowing the God of forever-past and forever-more in a personal way. Jeremiah 31:33-34 Statement: “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?” Rebuttal: Nope. Jeremiah 32:26-27 True community is a singleness of heart that is passionately pursing God together, word and deed. Jeremiah 32:38-40 People accuse God, in the Old Testament, of promoting slavery. They should read Jeremiah 34:8-22 first. Much love. www.themarinfoundation.org Read more

Pastors need to stop using sermon illustrations solely focused on their family. This is not prompted just because of GLBT people, but also folks who are single (who many times are also looked at as second class citizens in the church), as well as those who don’t have a family, or weren’t raised in a happy-go-lucky beautiful family life. Come up with something creative that is relevant to humanity—not just those in your church who are married and have kids.... Read more

Here is Part 1. Here is Part 2. Here is Part 3 (which provides a great overview of the whole discussion to this point) In one of the recent string of comments in this New Activism series, Jon, brings up a great point in reference to why people protest: “Why wouldn’t there be protestors?” It’s a simple and harmless statement, but extremely profound in that the question gives us the answer to the ‘why’ in that question. Why wouldn’t there... Read more

What is My One Sentence Bible? I just want to put out a thought for the day: As easy as it sounds, the more I live in life’s intricacies the more I take solace in God’s peace and comfort through the Word and prayer. I clearly recognize that I need to be drenched in the Being of our Lord – enveloped in His consuming Spirit. May I always humbly move forward in those refreshingly simple yearnings. 10-27-09: How does one... Read more

Let me make two things very clear before I expound on why I wholeheartedly believe the title to this post is absolute truth: 1. I love Leadership Journal and Out of UR, who are both owned by Christianity Today. It amazes me how the right hand doesn’t know what it’s doing from the left hand, as Leadership Journal and Out of UR have given The Marin Foundation, Love is an Orientation and our work balanced reviews, here and here. 2.... Read more

Here is Part 1 Here is Part 2 Here is a quick summary of the discussion thus far: My thesis is that traditional forms of activism don’t actually work in changing policy and it ends up causing more harm than good—whether marches, protests, split-screen debates, etc. Though even after explaining why I believe such a thing, not one person agreed with me. Well, one did. 🙂 After reading all of the comments, emails and facebook messages in which people explained... Read more

I am sorry for the five day layoff from posting any blogs. Time goes quick – but my head needed clearing from my emotional last week before I could possibly write anything else. I’m back now, and looking forward to continuing our time together. On top of everything that has been going on recently, I left at 4:45am Sunday morning after the wedding for Cincy to speak at Christian Community Development Association’s national conference, as well as participate in their board... Read more

I will be resuming the previous discussion about Activism tomorrow, as I apologize for the brief departure over the last few days. It has been a very rough week for me personally as life and death, excitement and pain, have all closely hovered around my daily existence. Two family members had unexpected surgery this past week, one of them being my 86 year old Grandpa. He suffers from Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease, and hasn’t been doing well. The doctors said... Read more

I have put off posting my new paradigm of activism for one more day because 100% of the people that either commented on yesterday’s post or emailed me about it disagreed with what I had to say (my wife and my dad both included in that group). A 100% disagreement has never happened—not that it’s a bad thing—because as always, I’m completely open to reassessing my stance. Conscientious seems to be the following overviews: 1. Marches/Protests/etc are worthwhile to bring... Read more
