Even more incredible than this inhuman and despicable cruelty is the fact that I still hear from Christian readers asking me, “What does this have to do with the gospel? Why don’t you talk about Catholic theology and not this political stuff?”
The spectacle of Catholics who cannot for the life of them figure out what cruelty to the least of these has to do with their faith just takes my breath away.
If you cannot find Christ in the beggar at the Church door, you will not find him in the chalice. – St. John Chrysostom
If Catholics spent a hundredth of the time they waste finding ancient texts to support their quibbles about communion in the hand on reading the immense body of literature on the Church’s teaching about her social doctrine then this kind of stuff would not only not be defended by Catholics prostituted to the Party of Trump, it would be fought as the crime it is and horrible men like this would be as politically popular as Jeffrey Dahmer, not typical specimens of his party.
