St. John’s Cornerstone Laid 1869

Today in 1869, the cornerstone was laid for St. John’s College, Brooklyn, which opened its doors in 1870. Founded by the Vincentian Fathers, in 1933 the college was accorded university status, and in 1954 the main campus moved to Queens. Today with five campuses (inccluding one in Rome), St. John’s is the second largest Catholic university in the United States. The first is DePaul University in Chicago, also a Vincentian institution.
