Celebrating Coma Day -- the anniversary of my awakening -- by exploring my journey and the researchers who allow the covertly aware to speak for themselves.

Every time I was moved or significantly stimulated, I woke up a little more, became more active…or both. We’ve long suspected that this was far from a coincidence. And as I’ve since learned from Dr. Adrian Owen’s new book, Into the Gray Zone: A Neuroscientist Explores the Border Between Life and Death, he strongly suspects that increased mental stimulation does indeed increase the chances of at least some recovery.

Given that Dr. Owen is among the world’s top covert awareness experts this isn’t exactly an uninformed guesstimate. Yet this particular “basket case” was denied any kind of rehabilitation therapy whatsoever, even as I was telling them to leave me alone so I could get back to sleep…in my coma-dream.

Indeed, the very MRI they were using to proclaim my hopelessness was the spark that lit the first embers of my awakening.
