A Strong Moment for Muslims at the Expense of an Unjust War

Not everyone was aboard the Khan bandwagon. Many Muslims and others struggled with the attention, which came from the praise and uplifting of a military family whose son lost his life serving a tour in Iraq. How can we praise military intervention in Iraq and Afghanistan, many asked? Ramon Mejia, a contributor to Altmuslim and a Muslim military veteran summed up the frustration and arguments some were feeling in a Facebook update:

I don’t understand why Muslim Veterans, or any Veteran, continues to perpetuate a false narrative that the war in Iraq was somehow altruistic. It wasn’t, it’s not, and it will never be. We did NOT go to Iraq to fight for or defend “Democracy,” “Values,” “American Principles,” or “Free” anybody. We viciously invaded a people’s land and destroyed their country.

I understand you want to legitimize our reason for going, but we were misled. Come to terms with it. I have and struggle every day to look myself in the mirror.

WE failed the Iraqi People. WE failed to recognize that WE were the oppressors. WE should of refused, WE didn’t. “But we took an oath…” Yeah that means nothing. Instead of enveloping yourself in the American Flag and continue to pretend, NOW is the time to speak up.

I’m A Muslim Veteran and my time in Iraq was not honorable, patriotic, or a sacrifice.

I’m sure this story isn’t done. Indeed, Trump was just gifted a Purple Heart from one of his supporters. It’ll be interesting to see how this continues to play out in the coming days.
