#CanYouHearUsNow
Muslim women around the world came together on Twitter, tweeting various ways in which they have spoken out (or chosen not to) in a viral #CanYouHearUsNow campaign. By sharing their stories, their reasons for speaking and pictures of themselves giving speeches, women obliterated the idea that Muslim women are deliberately silenced.
As activist Linda Sarsour wrote: “Tired of the obsession w/ Muslim women and who you think we are and are capable of. We define us. We tell our own stories.” The campaign gained huge traction, trending on Twitter and being covered by numerous media outlets. (Full disclosure: I took part as well in this campaign). On the whole the campaign was well received, though some argued that Muslim women and Ghazala Khan owed Trump no explanation.
