7 Key Ingredients to a Transformative Sermon (or How to Preach in a Way That Actually Makes a Difference)

IMG_0504E – Examples. What’s the most memorable part of Jesus’ teaching? His stories, without question. We might not remember his exact teaching on the Law, but we can all remember the story of the Good Samaritan or the Prodigal Son. Stories are handles by which your listeners can grab hold of the main point you’re trying to make. Ensure you have good examples that your listeners can wrap their arms around.

F – Future fulfillment. Every transformative sermon inspires. Every transformative sermon casts vision. More than simply transfer information or dispense guilt, a transformative sermon will paint a compelling picture of what life looks like when we get things right, when we trust God, when we obey his word. Usually the final words in the message, a transformative sermon will leave the listeners with the anticipation of what’s on the other side of obedience to God’s word.

G – God-empowered. This one’s simple. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes your words and transforms the human heart. If you don’t walk into the pulpit under the power of the Holy Spirit, then ultimately you have no business being up there. As a preacher, you need to do whatever you need to do to come under the authority and anointing of the Holy Spirit before you attempt to speak on his behalf.

QUESTION: What other ingredients would you add to a transformative sermon?
