June 23rd is National Pink Day.  This day is set aside to oppose bullying and celebrate the color pink. The color pink often represents femininity or softness. For this reason, during The Holocaust gay men, bisexual men, transgender women, and others considered sexual deviants were forced to wear a pink triangle.   Joshua 8:30 states, “Then Joshua built on Mount Ebal an altar to the LORD, the God of Israel,”.  Until 2019, we had no solid proof to support this verse. However, The Jerusalem Post reported that in 2019 an expedition was led to sift through the material discarded from previous excavations on Mount Ebal.  Among that discarded material was found a tablet. That tablet has now undergone x-ray tomographic measurements. The results of that have given us archaeological proof for... Read more

I’ve been rereading Rabbi Kushner’s book To Life this month. June being Pride Month, one thing Kushner said inspired me to think about how we treat the person amongst us who is “different”  from the majority of our community.  The quote inspired me to ask, is Judaism a community or religion? What does that mean for the LGBT+ community? Kushner wrote: “With no precise definintion of what Judaism believes, you would expect the result to be chaos and anarchy, but it’s... Read more

Bisexual While some people may think of discussing G-d’s sexuality as blasphemy, the authors of  The Bible did not believe so. The Bible has a lot to say on the topic. In our previous post, we established that spirits do have genders. Thus, if we believe G-d to be a spiritual being, she/he must have a gender. The question then becomes, what is the gender of G-d? The Bible tends to use the pronoun he for G-d. For this reason, throughout history, G-d has been seen as only a man. However, this ignores the fact The Holy Spirit is feminine in Hebrew, as we established in our post “Do Spirits Have... Read more

In my last article, I showed that according to The Bible, spirits have genders. However, gender and sexuality are different things. Do spirits have sexuality? Do Spirits Have Sexuality In The New Testament? The Bible seems to suggest that yes Spirits do have sexuality.  Of course, the most obvious example comes from the New Testament when The Spirit of The Lord “comes upon” Mary and impregnates her. Do spirits have genders? This question is important for our understanding of G-d.  While it may seem a hard question to answer, The Torah has a lot to say on the subject. Do Spirits Have Genders in Grammar First, we know that grammatically the word for spirit is feminine in Hebrew.  The Hebrew word Ruach means spirit or breath and it is grammatically feminine.  This alone doesn’t automatically mean that a spirit is female as the grammatical gender of a... Read more

Should Abraham have thrown out Ishmael and his mother? It is a rough moment in The Torah. Readers are often disturbed to read of a father throwing his son out into the desert to die. What are we to learn from this story? The Story: Why Abraham Threw Out Ishmael The story begins with G-d promising to make Abraham and Sarah parents. Sarah laughs at this idea. She clearly does not trust G-d to do what he said he would.... Read more

This week, we are reading the story of Ruth in synagogues around the world.  Ruth reminds us that converts should be loved and that the Torah was given to all who wished to receive it. As a convert, I am grateful for such a message. However, what is often overlooked in the reading of Ruth is the resemblance between Ruth’s words and our modern wedding vows. Indeed, modern marriage vows are in The Bible. Ruth’s Words Echo Our Modern Marriage... Read more
