RJ Halbert, comprised of Jason and Rhonda Halbert, have transformed their supernatural thriller “Caretaker” into an immersive dramatic experience, recruiting an impressive ensemble of celebrity voices to bring their novel to life.

Released on the one-year anniversary of the novel’s initial publication, the audiobook features performances by Kelly Clarkson, Amy Grant, and Eric Avari, among others. The project emerged from a deeply personal place of healing for the Halberts, who channeled their family’s traumatic experiences into the narrative.
“The book came out of a deep place of trauma for us,” Jason Halbert said. “We poured a lot of our trauma into creating this world.”
The couple’s approach to casting was both ambitious and methodical. Rhonda Halbert explained that many friends had asked about an audio version, prompting them to dream big. “When Jason dreams up something, it’s always big, it’s never small,” she said.
They reached out to potential cast members through proper channels, sending the book to agents and waiting nervously for responses. To their surprise, most actors were enthusiastic about participating.
A standout casting choice was Eric Avari, known for roles in “Stargate” and “The Chosen,” who was selected to voice the mysterious Caretaker character. Jason Halbert was drawn to his voice and background, noting the actor’s connection to ancient religious traditions.
“He was drawn to the story first by the symbol, and then all the research we did into ancient culture,” Halbert said. The novel’s cover features an Ouroboros symbol, which intrigued Avari due to its connections to his own religious background.
Kelly Clarkson’s involvement came through her long-standing relationship with Jason Halbert, who has worked with her for 22 years. The singer-songwriter was initially hesitant about acting but agreed to voice a small role as a realtor.
“She was worried she would stand out, but she flows seamlessly in the story,” Jason said.
Amy Grant’s participation came after a meaningful lunch where she recommended brain therapy to the Halberts during a challenging period of family trauma. Grant ultimately voiced the character of Liana, a singer-songwriter, and even recorded a song connected to the book’s narrative.
The novel itself explores supernatural themes while maintaining a sense of mystery. Rhonda Halbert described their approach as intentionally subtle. “Our hope is that mysteries will speak to people, whether they’re believers or not,” she said.
The story follows a family in Littleton, New Hampshire, with narrative threads connecting to ancient Babylon. The audiobook’s complex structure and mysterious elements make it challenging to discuss without revealing spoilers.
“The family is not necessarily on a faith journey,” Jason Halbert explained. “We’re exploring how sometimes the supernatural pursues us rather than waiting for us to pursue it.”
The Halberts see the project as more than just a novel. Rhonda Halbert has developed a personal mission statement she writes in every book: “Listen to the whispers.”
“I want to teach people to start listening beyond the veil,” she said. “Quiet your mind, because it takes a quiet mind to listen to the whisper.”
The audiobook represents a creative breakthrough for the couple, emerging from a period of intense personal healing. Their collaborative approach and willingness to explore complex emotional territories have resulted in a unique storytelling experience.
“Caretaker” is the first in a planned three-part trilogy, promising more supernatural mysteries to come.
