Author and speaker Ted Baehr’s latest book offers an intimate portrait of Hollywood’s golden era through the lens of his father’s remarkable career, revealing the inner workings of the entertainment industry during a transformative period.

“Behind the Scenes of The Golden Age of Hollywood and Broadway: The Legacy of Robert Allen” chronicles the life of Baehr’s father, a prominent actor who starred in 62 movies, including 12 western films during the 1930s.
The book traces Robert Allen’s journey from struggling bank employee during the Great Depression to a box office award winner in 1936. At a time when many Americans stood in bread lines, Allen was earning $500-$600 weekly as a contract actor with Warner Brothers and Columbia Pictures.
“He did every genre,” Baehr said, highlighting his father’s versatility. One of his favorite films featured his father in “The Black Room” mystery alongside Boris Karloff.
Baehr, founder of MovieGuide, brings a unique perspective to the narrative, having grown up in the entertainment industry. He describes his own transformation from left wing leanings to to a conservative Christian media critic, a journey paralleling his father’s spiritual awakening.
The book provides insights into the studio system’s practices, including how companies like Warner Brothers would control actors’ careers by placing them on “stasis” — effectively limiting their professional opportunities.
“They would put you out and just get you down,” Baehr explained. “In those days, they actually owned people or their names.”
Beyond a family memoir, the book serves as a historical document of an industry in transition. Baehr notes significant changes in Hollywood’s collaborative culture, remembering a time when film crews and actors would socialize and travel together, compared to today’s more isolated production environments.
The book has already received endorsements from notable Hollywood figures, including Roma Downey and John Wayne’s scriptwriter. Baehr admits to initial insecurities about the project, but multiple positive reviews have bolstered his confidence.
Baehr’s work with MovieGuide has positioned him as a significant voice in Christian media criticism. He notes a dramatic increase in faith-based content in Hollywood, contrasting the landscape when MovieGuide began with today’s more inclusive environment.
“When we started MovieGuide, there was only one movie with overt evangelical Christian content,” he said. Now, numerous filmmakers and actors openly discuss their faith, with Christian themes becoming more prevalent in mainstream entertainment.
Recent examples include the billion-dollar success of films where Christian creators were integral to the production, such as an unnamed movie where multiple key creatives shared their faith.
The book released this summer, giving readers a comprehensive look at a pivotal era in entertainment history through a deeply personal narrative.
For Baehr, the project is more than a biographical account — it’s a celebration of his father’s legacy and a testament to the transformative power of personal faith in the entertainment industry.
“Truth is stranger than fiction,” Baehr said, highlighting the remarkable journey documented in his upcoming book.
