Some time ago I asked Trump supporters what it would take for them to withdraw their support from Trump. The most common answer was only if he changed his whole political position to left-wing, something that is not really even in the realm of imagining. I considered that a non-answer. I believe that many Trump supporters, including many Christian ones, even “MAGA Christians,” are reasonable people who have a limit to their support for any politician.
I know of one Christian who supported Trump in 2015/2016, who voted for Trump during his first election campaign, who has since withdrawn his support for Trump. In his own inimitable words to me “Trump is not the savior of the American experiment.” What exactly changed his mind I don’t know. But there must have come a proverbial straw (that broke the camel’s back) such that he withdrew his support.
Most recently Trump has publicly suggested that American national elections be “nationalized.” That they be taken out of states’ hands and governed by the federal government. That would require a constitutional amendment, something so far Trump has not called for. Rather, he has suggested to congressional Republicans that they make the change—something even they admit they cannot do.
Many people, including this writer, believe that Trump wants to find a way to either cancel future elections or change how they are governed—including especially decided as to their outcomes.
It seems to this writer that every week, if not every day, Trump does or says something that is nothing less than shocking. Sometimes it is announced or expressed through or by one or more of his subordinates. He has become increasingly mercurial, making and amending or withdrawing decisions on a day-by-day basis. Will he go to war with Iran? Or will he simply threaten such? Or will he enter into diplomatic discussions with that country? To what end?
I do not remember a president since Nixon who was on the evening news on all major networks every evening. And that was only once the Watergate scandal was in full swing.
But back to my question to Trump supporters, especially Christian ones. Where is the tipping point? Where would it be? Do not answer that it would come only if Trump became not Trump—politically. Assume he continues with his basic policies (whatever those are) and does not “flip over” to being liberal. What would it take for you to withdraw your support?
Then, anticipating some reasonable and respectable answers, I ask whether that would be too late to rescue American democracy and rule of law.
I look forward only to serious, considered, and calm answers.
