I went to confession. It had been way too long. Read more

We did it! We made a library! Molly wrote to me today with this photo of her free library for all the guests at the Friendship Room, now nicely stocked. My regular readers will recall that last month, I found the Friendship Room’s tiny free library was nearly empty and only had stuffy proselytizing books they had been donated– the Friendship Room doesn’t proselytize, but they can only give away what they’ve been given. I asked my readers in their charity... Read more

I took Rose on an expedition to the thrift shop, to look for fifty cent toys. They were a bribe for being good while I waited in line to drop off yet another form at Job and Family Services, and she had been good. It was a long wait for both of us. We were weary and not fit for company, when we entered the store. The thrift shop is run by Franciscan sisters. They have a small holy water font... Read more

Maybe it would be more genuine if we'd actually voice our thoughts and prayers. Read more

I have been informed, in the comment section, that since I don’t love my country, I ought to get on the next plane to someplace I actually do like. That’s rather a tempting thought. I fantasized for a moment about where I would go. When I was a very little girl I was torn between wanting to live on Prince Edward Island, Narnia or Middle Earth. Then, after I read Les Miserables, dragging the unabridged volume all around with me one quite... Read more

So, you’re Catholic and you wanna correct the Pope? And you wanna clap back at anyone who says you can’t correct the Pope, by referencing Saint Catherine of Siena? Awesome. Saint Catherine of Siena is one of my favorite saints. I hope knowing that doesn’t ruin your devotion to her. I think all of us could stand to imitate Saint Catherine of Siena. And Saint Catherine of Siena did lovingly pester the Pope until he left Avignon and came home to... Read more

There is a word for a Catholic who thinks the Pope is an anti-pope, and it's not "traditionalist." Do you know what it is? Read more

With great regret, I draw to your attention TV’s Donald Trump.  The president of the United States. The one Evangelicals and some right-wing Catholics fawn over as if he were the second coming of Christ. The one whom we’re assured is the most pro-life president since Reagan. The one who took several days to condemn white supremacism, and then almost immediately turned around and said there were fine people on both sides. Do you all recall that event? Well, tonight,... Read more

There was another demolition on my street, this afternoon. A small crew was taking down another derelict house. There are many old houses up in LaBelle which are scheduled for demolition– as many or more as there are homeless men and women downtown and living in hiding on the cliff’s edge.  The city pays quite a bit of money to demolish each house, and wrings its hands about the homelessness problem. Somehow, that economic strategy doesn’t add up to me, but nothing around... Read more
