Don’t Do Anything I Wouldn’t Do

Don’t Do Anything I Wouldn’t Do September 28, 2011

Fairly often, I finish a conversation with a saying that echoes my Midwestern roots. As I take my leave of someone, I encourage them by saying, “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do!” I get a wide variety of responses. My favorite so far was the person who told me that they were still trying to think of something I might not do!

I thought it might be helpful to put together a list of some of those things, as a guide for  the future.

1. Sing in public, or in private. When I sing, people are surprised that I can speak.

2. Have a pet that wears clothes.

3. Watch a baseball game more than once every 10 years.

4. Drink light beer. Light beer is what you use to wash out the glasses after the dark beer is all gone.

5. Arrive late or leave early.  While some people think that being introverted is part of being contemplative, that has never been my particular gift.

6. Fail to see the humor in a situation, even if there is an ironic/sarcastic edge to it. I enjoy laughing.

7. Spend a longer amount of time preparing and packing than the trip will last.

8.  Wear contact lenses. I have never been able to stand even the idea of putting something into my eye on purpose.

9. Live in a house that I built myself.

10. I do not see myself going without my iPhone and iPad anytime soon.

11. Take a cruise.  Being stuck on a big ship without being able to get off sounds a lot like being in prison to me.

12. Understand the appeal of Angry Birds.

What are the things you would not do?
