Focus and Flexibility

Focus and Flexibility

Once I begin something new, a great deal of what happens next depends on my focus and my flexibility.

Whether it is changing the direction of my career, preparing a meal, working to address a social issue, or having a single conversation, much of what I contribute is a result of the combination of my flexibility and focus.

I can be very focused. I have been described as having “attention surplus disorder.” I am willing to put in a great deal of effort, extra hours, and emotional energy to accomplish my goals. I have, at times, tended to go through things to get to where I wanted to be.

Focus can be crucial to moving toward your goals. Focus is also deeper than I have recognized at times. Focus is not only the knowledge of where we are going. It includes an appreciation for why we are going there and how it will prepare us for what comes next.

Focus is more than a relentless pursuit of accomplishment. Focus reflects our core values, the truth about who we are as individuals, and as an organization.

Flexibility allows us to implement focus and make it tangible. Our values are clear and we remain true to them. Our vision becomes clearer as we move toward it. We have a great deal of flexibility in the approaches we take to reach our goals.

While we can learn a great deal from the examples of others, we can never replicate what they have done. There are lessons for us to learn, and to leave for other people, by doing things our own way. Flexibility is what gives us the ability to be creative and explore new approaches.

Where is your focus? What are the truths you are not willing to compromise?

What new path will you discover and explore today?

How do your focus and your flexibility help you move toward your goals?
