The Most Important Meal of the Day

The Most Important Meal of the Day 2023-09-18T14:55:51-08:00

Breakfast provides the nutritional spark and sets the tone for our day.

Breakfast in the United States has a history that mirrors the economic and sociological development of American culture. Before the Industrial Revolution, breakfast was a product of an agrarian society. People ate food that they or their neighbors produced themselves. In addition, people would rise early, work for several hours, and return for a sustaining meal. It was not unusual for people on farms to drink beer, or eat dessert, with breakfast.

As people migrated into cities and began working in industrial jobs, beer with breakfast became more problematic, contributing to tardiness, absenteeism, and workplace accidents. Managers and owners became strong proponents of Prohibition to address these workplace problems. They also encouraged the use of more stimulating beverages, allowing coffee and tea breaks during work hours.

In many monastic communities, breakfast reflects other values.  It is often shared without speaking as a continuation of the Great Silence, the time set aside each night for rest, reflection, and sleep. Breakfast is an extension of the time spent in freedom from words.

I am beginning a quest for breakfasts that combine hearty nutrition and practical spirituality for our post-industrial lives. Even without actual beer or actual silence, I believe we can find breakfast places that give us strength for our journey and help us build vital community.

Each month we will visit a distinctive Southern California breakfast destination, make new friends, and learn more about the places we live. We will share parts of our stories, listen, and draw strength from each other.

Each month, we will share the most important meal of the day.

We will begin our quest this month on Saturday, January 28 at Twisted Sage Cafe in San Dimas. I look forward to seeing you there.

How do you create time for a breakfast that reflects your values?
