Lent Reflection: Fear and Authenticity

Lent Reflection: Fear and Authenticity

For me, this Lent is about changing the way I understand and relate to fear.

The first step on my Lenten journey is recognizing fear. Another step toward giving up my fear is appreciating it, becoming more friendly toward it. Another step is letting go of fear.

The next step for me is being authentic.

To be deeply authentic, I need to both recognize what is true and to share that truth.

Authenticity grows out of recognizing what is true, knowing my deepest self, discovering my core values. Until I know the truth, I cannot share it with anyone. Discerning the truth, coming to recognize it, can be challenging. Many people find it helpful to spend some time getting to know themselves, often with the help of an experienced coach or guide. While a specific event may provide the initial spark, this is often a process that lasts over time.

In addition, authenticity shares the truth. I may not be able to give ultimate answers or tell you exactly what you want to know, but I can tell you the truths that I have learned on my own journey, and lessons I have gained from the journeys of others.

Authenticity is sharing my true self.

I have learned quite a bit about fear already during this Lent, and much of it is about being authentic. Time that I have spent listening and reflecting has allowed me to recognize deeper truths about myself and how I relate to fear. Sharing and listening with people have allowed me to tell the truth, and to gain deeper insights into the truth about myself.

As I recognize who I truly am and share my truth with others, I become less fearful.

What truths have you gained on your journey?

How will you share your authentic self?
