I spend a lot of time reminding people of what they already know.
As I work with individuals and organizations, I listen to their stories. They often feel stuck or trapped, that they have done what was expected of them and their expectations are not being met.
I ask questions that help them put the pieces of their stories together in ways they have not seen, and remind them about why they do what they do. I help them appreciate the significance of things they already know.
I also spend as much time as I can drawing people into community. I love to bring people together, ask questions, and encourage them to share in new ways. Community is sparked when people spend time together, listen to each other, and take the time to remember what they already know. Community helps us see and hear truths in new ways. Community helps us acquire new tastes and appreciate new aromas.
It is easy for us to forget. Our lives are full of distractions and entertainments. It is easy for us to put more time and effort into caring about other people, even fictional characters, than we do in caring about ourselves. We are drawn away from the depth we need to remember what is truly important to us in the long run.
It is why we mark the passing of time, why we celebrate birthdays and anniversaries, why we have reunions and New Year’s Day. It is important for us to take time each day, each week, each month to be reminded of what we already know.
We need to remember and celebrate what we already know so we can appreciate where we are going next.
What reminds you today of what you already know?
What, or who, do you need to spend time today remembering and celebrating?
Why do you do what you do?
