So, What is this Epiphany, Anyway?

So, What is this Epiphany, Anyway? January 5, 2013

I am part of a liturgical church. Whenever we get together, we remember our story and we share a meal.

Epiphany is the season that follows the twelve days of Christmas, beginning on the morning after Twelfth Night. During Epiphany we remind ourselves through our story that the Sacred is manifest in the everyday.

Epiphany is about how the world reveals that the Sacred and the everyday are inseparable.

Wherever we look, the Divine makes itself known. Whether we are walking on the beach along the ocean, hiking a trail in a forest, rocking in a chair looking out over mountains, or watching snow or rain fall, our story carries us forward. Sun and stars, clouds and wind, stone and earth and plants and animals, light and dark; the primal elements draw us toward universal truths.

We hear the voice of the Sacred in the sound of flowing water, the rain on the roof, the rhythm of our footsteps, and in silence. We recognize the face of the Divine as we watch the light of a candle or the sun coming above the horizon. We feel it in the sun on our skin and in a warm embrace. Its fragrance is in the aroma of fresh air, and in warm bread. We can taste the Sacred in an excellent meal, well-crafted brews, and in the bread and the wine that we share.

Our stories are filled with things that direct our attention to the Divine in our lives, and in the people around us.

The stories we share ignite our recognition of the Life all around us.

Epiphany reminds us to stop, breathe, and remember the Sacred that infuses our every day.

Where do you recognize the Sacred in your everyday life?

How is the everyday infused with the Sacred in your story?
