It can be easy to forget about the depth all around us.

I am reminded of depth when I look out across the ocean, stand on the peak of a mountain, or walk surrounded by tall trees. I remember when I get away from the lights of a city to watch the stars in the night sky, appreciate inspiring architecture, or spend time listening to silence.

It is almost as if the depth of certain experiences reaches out to clear my mind and cleanse my soul of distractions.

It is much more difficult to remember in the middle of an argument, or surrounded by unwanted sound, or working hard to find the solution to a particular problem.

We can lose touch with the depth that is all around us, and within us. We may even struggle against the ways that depth reminds us it is here. Being reminded of depth is to be faced with the fact that we have been distracted, that we are missing it.

Slowly, gently, I am coming to see that even the times and places that distract me are reminders. Depth is hiding in the people and places that get my attention. Depth is hiding in plain sight.

Like a rose that opens to share its color and complexity with the world around it, depth invites us to recognize it. The vibrance and aroma of depth welcome us to pay attention, but do not overwhelm us. Depth shares itself, but allows us to continue being distracted.

The annoyances that disrupt our careful plans remind us that depth is waiting for us.

We may pause and celebrate the depth hiding in front of us, or we may spend our time chasing other things.

How is the depth around you attracting your attention?

Where will you discover depth today?
