Today is not the longest day of the year. Each day is the same length.

Today, in the northern hemisphere, is the day with the longest period of sunshine. It is the brightest day of the year, the day we spend the most time in the light.

Many of us revel in the light. We bask in the bright sun, in the light produced by our technology, in the glow of attention from other people.

We are drawn to the light. We believe what we see in the light. Light reassures us and makes us more comfortable.

Many of us are afraid of darkness. We believe there are things hiding in the dark that threaten to upset our organized, comfortable lives. We turn away and seek the brightness of the light.

Light allows us to see, and we trust that seeing allows us to know. So much of who we think we are depends on knowing. Living in the light allows us to believe we are certain.

Darkness is a place of exploration. Where we cannot see, our other senses develop greater strength. Even our sight can become stronger, as we find things from which we can be blinded by the light.

Darkness gives us the opportunity to look inward and explore our own depths.

Today, the brightest day of the year, is actually the beginning of another long, steady voyage of discovery into the darkness. For the next six months, each day will be less bright than the last. Each day will be a new opportunity to explore the deep truths waiting for us in the darkness.

What deep truths will you explore in the darkness?

Where are the deep truths that living in the light makes it harder for you to see?
