Deep Change

There are times when I would really like change to be easy.

I just want things to be different. That often means that I wish I were different. Not different as in wacky or zany; I would like it if I had made different choices that had resulted in different circumstances.

Part of the challenge of change is that circumstances have deeper causes. Things do not just happen. We make choices, and our choices affect the rest of our lives.

We want to believe in magical power that makes immediate changes. We want conflicts and difficulties to be resolved, and we want them to be resolved right now. We expect the solution by the end of the movie, or television show, or TED talk, or commercial. We expect to be able to watch it happen.

Reality is more empowering, and more magical, than our fantasies.

Real change is deeper than circumstances. Real change does not happen immediately, and it takes work.

People come to me hoping that I will give them a safe place to work on growing and changing. They expect that safety to feel more secure, to give them more joy, to help them change their lives. We do create that safe place together; it often comes with a new recognition of what it means to change, and what it means to be safe.

Our safety and our ability to make meaningful change flows out of the truth.

Together we learn to appreciate when we are safe and when we are not. We see how we contribute to our own circumstances, and how we can begin building our way into a new direction.

We can change deeply. We can grasp our own potential, and become more.

How deeply would you like to change?

Who are you becoming?
