There are times when we become disconnected and alone.
Even in a group of people, or in front of a group of people, we feel separate and removed. We continue to function, to meet responsibilities and meet expectations. We keep taking steps, doing what we do. We have become distant, apart, different.
It is easy for us to neglect our need to be connected. We tell ourselves we are taking responsibility for our own lives. We like to believe that we are strong, able to stand on our own two feet. We forget how disconnected we can become when we focus on taking care of ourselves.
We disconnect from ourselves, from each other, and from the Sacred all around us.
We drive ourselves to work as hard as we can, and even harder. Fear, regret, and anxiety push us further and further from our true selves.
We distance ourselves from the people around us. We turn relationships intended to be supportive, even loving, into sources of stress. We guard ourselves, closing ourselves off from people who care about us.
We ignore the vibrant signs of sacred truths that surround us in the world. We begin to see life as a series of problems to be solved rather than wonders to be explored.
Spiritual life shows us opportunities to connect. It draws us to explore connections that have been closed off for too long. As spiritual life grows in us, we discover more and more ways to be connected.
Spiritual life connects us to our truest selves, other people, and the Sacred around us. In a world filled with real tragedies and injustices, it is essential for us to stay connected.
