There are people who believe spiritual life is based in being afraid.
Some are afraid of what other people think of them, and what they think of themselves. Some feel guilty and responsible, and are afraid they will never be forgiven. Some are afraid that, when they break the rules, it means they are bad people.
Some people are afraid of what taking spiritual life seriously would do to them, and make them do.
My experience with spiritual life is different, maybe even the opposite.
Yes, spiritual life often encourages us to face what makes us afraid. Spiritual life brings us into direct contact with our fears, seeing them honestly. Spiritual life draws us into intimidating situations and whispers in our ear, “Do not be afraid.”
There is deep Sacred truth and wisdom in looking directly into the eyes of our fear. As we refuse to turn away when we are afraid, we see our true selves more clearly. It is as if the things which scare us are a mirror in which we are reflected.
There is a difference between not being afraid and kissing our brains goodbye. There are people and situations about which we need to be concerned and careful. We need to be wise, preparing and strengthening ourselves. Not being afraid is not the opposite of being smart.
Spiritual life draws us to understand our lives more deeply. In real ways, at essential levels, we choose. Our choice is almost always, in some form, between being afraid and being true to ourselves.
The choice is each of our’s to make.
Spiritual life helps us choose to be true to ourselves, not to be afraid.
