There are people who appear to believe spiritual life is all about the past. They read ancient texts. They memorize and theorize about arcane facts. The people who help them find spiritual life wrote what they had to say centuries ago.  Spiritual life, for them, seems to be something historic, something built from very old stones.

There are other people who appear to believe spiritual life only exists in the future. They fantasize about what is beyond what we can see, the life that is to come. They hope for a future paradise in which all our problems are solved. Spiritual life, for them, is beyond what we can experience in this life, almost like science fiction.

For me, spiritual life is immediate, in this present moment. Spiritual life never becomes old, never recedes into the past. Spiritual life is never distant, never beyond our reach in the here and now. Spiritual life is always with us.

There are times when it can be a challenge to experience the presence of spiritual life. There may be times when we feel the Sacred is far away, removed into the past or the future. Sometimes we might pay more attention to the obstacles or distractions than to the presence of spiritual life.

It can be challenging to remember the immediacy, the intimacy spiritual life. We can get caught up in what we can see, what we can taste, what we can hear. We forget to pay attention to the reality of spiritual life.

It is helpful for us to schedule times to remind ourselves about the deep truth of the present. We take a breath. Spiritual life floods into us, reminding us to pay attention.

How do you pay attention to the loving presence of spiritual life?

When will you pay attention to spiritual life today?
