SSF: “Koh Yao Noi”

SSF: “Koh Yao Noi” June 23, 2014

Today’s short isn’t a fiction piece, and it’s not animated. So, by virtue of those two facts, it’s a bit of a departure from my typical offerings. However, its description contains the following phrase: “…using a GoPro camera and a Quadcopter…”

And SOLD!

Seriously, though, this is gorgeous. Even if the technical details behind Philip Bloom’s video were not quite so nerdtastic, the imagery would make it worth your time. Just do yourself a favor and give it the Full-Screen HD treatment.

I love the color palette — predominantly muted browns and golds and greens, but with those vibrant flashes of color. And the way the film’s subjects respond to the filming, like the water buffalo. Or the motorcyclist on the causeway. Gatlin Elms’ Thomas Newman-esque score is a great compliment, as well, and I love the subtle sounds Bloom incorporates into his soundtrack — two or three times only, if I heard correctly.

But the thing that really jumped out at me is the very thing ThisIsColossal pointed out in the post that brought this video to my attention last week: It’s an extraordinary example of “making use of technology to quickly establish such a strong sense of place.” Great stuff.

Oh, and that little kid in the pink shirt? Awesome. Flat-out steals the show.

“Filmed, Flown, and Edited.” We’re going to be seeing more and more of that, methinks.
