There’s a new Mad Max film coming out shortly; this weekend, actually. It looks insane. In honor of the (impending) occasion, here’s a Mad Max-inspired short film that’s slightly less insane (but visually splendid and highly imaginative):

After the seas have disappeared, a courageous pilot fights against vicious sky pirates for control of the last remaining source of water: the clouds.

The bulk of the film was made using nothing but laptops during a 7-week artist retreat on a small caribbean island. Be sure to check out our behind the scenes videos HERE.

I love the way it doesn’t over-explain its post-apocalyptic skyscape. It just throws us in there and lets us work out the details for ourselves. (I also really love the way the airplanes cover a wide range of eras. And the dog-fighting.)

In a move reminiscent of Timothy Reckart’s recent decision to freely release “Head Over Heels” while pairing it with bonus tracks/features folks can buy, the team at Mighty Coconut has made the short available in its entirety via their website, but have included commentary and bonus material (for a small price).

I like this trend. May it continue.
