(Photo: Saturday Evening Post) Yesterday I linked to several stories that outlined the growing tension between our government and our churches. Today at Patheos, two more perspectives: Russell Shaw declares The Persecution of Religion has Begun and explains: “Don’t think I’m making the wild-eyed claim that this new persecution either is or ever is likely to become a bloody one resembling the purges of the French and Mexican Revolutions or the Communist war on religion—eruptions of violence in which thousands... Read more

With his beautifully filmed series “Catholicism”, Father Robert Barron has done for the church what Ken Burns did for the Civil War and Baseball — brought it to life in an immediate, meaningful and accessible way. Some parts of the series have run on some PBS stations, and tonight EWTN will be debuting six episodes. I cannot recommend the series enough and urge you to gather your family (and friends and neighbors) together — even those who roll their eyes... Read more

One of the stupidest political remarks I ever heard came from Ben Affleck, who — campaigning for Hillary Clinton during her 2000 senate run — declared that a vote for her opponent, Rick Lazio, would amount to a vote (I am paraphrasing) “to bring back Irish Need Not Apply signs in the workplace.” It does appear, though, that the Obama administration has decided that a Catholics Need Not Apply sign might be in order. Today Michael Gerson spells out why... Read more

Source Next Sunday closes out the Liturgical Year by revealing Christ the King, the Self-Immolating Bridegroom. My column at First Things this week looks at the words of Pope Benedict XVI about the workings of his Kingship, which are not always obvious: The King is Jesus. In him God entered humanity and espoused it to himself. This is the usual form of the divine activity in relation to mankind. God does not have a fixed plan that he must carry... Read more

Y’all know me — I am a technophobe and always behind on the gadgetry trends; I still don’t have a smart phone and I only have an iPad because it was a gift. And now, the whole world seems to be abuzz (or, ablaze?) over the new Kindle Fire. So, naturally, that means I am finally wondering whether it’s time for me to ask for a basic, no-frills Kindle or some sort of e-reader for Christmas? Are they worth it?... Read more

It appears Chelsea Clinton is going to NBC: NBC said it had hired the 31-year-old Clinton to work on projects for “NBC Nightly News” and Brian Williams’ newsmagazine, “Rock Center.” She will report stories for the feel-good “Making a Difference” series. The only child of former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is pursuing a doctorate at Oxford and working for the Clinton Foundation and Clinton Global Initiative. So, she’s done with the hedge-fund management stuff... Read more

With all there is to read on the Penn State/Sandusky story, here are two excellent pieces that should rise to the top of the pile: Read Mark Shea on Betrayal and the Power of a Relationship: But though lots of combox warriors are quite adept at fantasizing about how bravely they would have behaved and how vile Mike McQueary is in comparison to their brave selves, how they would have taken a baseball bat to Sandusky had they caught him... Read more

I just went over to the Mystic Monk site to place an order for my Hermit’s Bold Blend and I saw it: it’s here! Jingle Bell Java is here! It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Patheos’ Future of Seminary Educationsymposium included some thoughts specific to Catholic Seminaries, but there was one issue I really wanted to write about and couldn’t because the timing was off — the truly historic Tri-Diocesan merger of three important seminaries in the New York area: Archbishop Dolan and his brother bishops of the Diocese of Brooklyn and the Diocese of Rockville Centre Nov. 10 jointly signed a joint operating agreement creating a single program of priestly formation for their three... Read more

I remember having sex-ed in junior high school, 1971. So, now we’ve had 4 decades — forty years — of sex education in the public schools, which was supposed to teach kids, among other things, about contraception and “responsible, safe” sex. Sex education was supposed to “prevent unplanned pregnancies” and in that sense was supposed to help create a world where abortion was “legal, safe and rare.” And abortion clinics — especially Planned parenthood — they’re a “service” to women,... Read more
