Newt Hearts Hagee

Newt Hearts Hagee March 16, 2011

I must admit that the thought of certain Republicans running for president makes me a bit giddy.  Sarah Palin’s run would be entertaining, of course.  Michelle Bachman could also be a hoot.  But the one I’m really looking forward to is Newt Gingrich.

Newt seems to be getting serious about it.  He’s a spankin’ fresh new Catholic and all his (many, many, but who’s counting?) sins are supposedly behind him.

But are they?  He’s already made some outrageously stoopid self-defensive statements.  The best of these came when he blamed his various affairs on his (sniff, sniff) love for our country.  You’ve probably already heard how he told CNN that his dalliances were “partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked far too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate.”

Wow!  How’s he going to beat that one?  Well, he could start by meeting one of the most vile, yet influential (!) evangelical leaders in the country.  Perhaps it could be someone whom even found John McCain found unacceptable?

When Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) accepted the endorsement of Texas megachurch pastor John Hagee in 2008, the result was a PR disaster. After critics pointed to Hagee’s incendiary views on gays (whom he held responsible for Hurricane Katrina) and Catholicism (which he described as a “false cult“), the Arizona Republican called Hagee’s views “crazy and unacceptable” and renounced the endorsement.

Yes, it’s our old friend John Hagee!  He’s been forgiven by the cretinous Bill Donohue.  His comments about Hitler fulfilling the God’s word were pardoned by his new besties, right-wing (or willfully ignorant) Jews.

This association won’t hurt Newt at all.  It only caused a problem for McCain because everyone thought that he was above those kinds of associations (which he clearly never was).

It certainly won’t cause any troubles with his fellow Catholics (wouldn’t Hagee usually call them papists?) or with Republican Jews.  But the real reason Newt is going to bed with Hagee is that the more old time religion he can associate with, the more he thinks everyone will just forget about his patriotic affairs and his unbelievable hypocrisy.  Of the latter I’m sure there’s a Clinton somewhere who will remind him.

The Republican primaries are going to be a lot of fun!
